Coronavirus and Hair Loss
It is no doubt that the global pandemic we are currently in, and have been in for the past few months, has caused people multitudes of stress. No matter how you’ve been feeling over the course of this time, stress can take a large toll on us both physically and mentally. You may not even realize that you’re stressed but your body does. When your body is stressed it can cause a variety of physical changes including hair loss. In this blog post, we are going to be discussing some of the various ways that you can help cope with hair loss due to stress from the pandemic. Keep reading to learn more.
Identify Where The Stress Is Coming From
We understand that this can be difficult and that your stress from the coronavirus may be coming from all different angles but try to identify what exactly is stressing you out. Many times, it may be from all the media content that you are being presented with. Whether this be from the news, social media, or online, one thing that you can easily do is to be mindful of what types of media you are consuming. Even if you’re mindlessly scrolling or keeping the TV on in the background, you’re still consuming that media which could be stressing you out even more. Try and limit how much time you’re spending online.
Eat Whole and Healthy Foods
When we’re stressed, a lot of people tend to reach for food for a source of comfort. While there is nothing wrong with a bowl of macaroni and cheese or pizza from your favorite take out joint, try and be mindful of what you’re eating. Health starts from the inside out and if you’re not consuming foods with proper vitamins and nutrients, your body isn’t going to feel or look its best. This also includes drinking enough water. We love coffee, energy drinks, and cocktails but these tend to dehydrate your body. This can lead to your hair feeling dull and brittle, which can then cause more hair loss. The occasional treat is fine and you should treat yourself but for the most part, do your body and hair a favor by consuming healthy foods and hydrating yourself by drinking enough water.
Be Aware of How You Respond To Stress
Just as we mentioned earlier, identifying where your stress comes from while also identifying how you respond to stress is important. Sometimes when people are stressed they do certain physical things. This can look different on everyone but one common response is to grab their hair or run their fingers over their hair. When you grab or pull on your hair, this can lead to immense amounts of breakage and damage. Instead of grabbing or pulling on your hair, reach for something else like a stress ball or something else to fidget with.
Be Mindful of Your Hair Care Routine
All the time we’re spending at home means that we’re not getting ready as much as we used too. Be mindful of your hair care routine and make sure your hair is getting the love it deserves. Try and use less heat and products that could be drying out your hair. Wear your hair down and avoid using harsh hair ties that can grab and pull your hair. If you’re wanting to put your hair up, use claw clips or silk scrunchies that are less damaging to your hair. Sleeping on a silk pillowcase can also help limit hair breakage too.
